I would put wood on the stairs and do a stair runner. I have carpet on my stairs and tile and hardwoods everywhere else. If hardwood flooring covers half of the room, you will need to account for the change in elevation from the wood to the carpet. I would recommend a table saw for this job though as I had to rip an 1" off of every tread. The other option is to replace the tread piece entirely with a hardwood border. Attach that piece with construction adhesive and nails as well. If you do trip or fall, hardwood will cause more injury than carpet.

I was still anxious as to the condition of the wood under the carpet so I ripped the padding off with one good tug and easily pulled the staples out of the wood. Carpet also won’t last as long as hardwood and will need to be replaced frequently. We are debating hardwood in the upstiars hallway (since we would love to eventually hardwood the entire house).
